An Introduction to Using Patterns in Web Design
The biggest challenge for web designers is the unthinkably huge number of possible ways to solve any given problem. We usually don’t think of this because we have our habits and traditions to fall back on, but there are literally billions of possible pixel combinations for each page we make.

There is a better way to manage this vast complexity than by making big decisions up front and hoping for the best. To make better sites — sites that are functional, beautiful, and “usable” — we have to break our design problems up into small independent chunks based on the real issues within our requirements. Christopher Alexander, who came up with this stuff, calls these chunks patterns.

Color, Contrast & Dimension in News Design
Welcome to the interactive color experience, an online guide that explains color theory and shows how to use it in design through examples and exercises.

The tour is split into eight sections: The power of color, The physiology & theory of color, color contrast & dimension, color on the web, eye-trac research, bibliography, about this project

Color Codes Matching Chart HTML (Convert CMYK, RGB Hex)
Note that the conversions in this color codes chart are best described as “nominal”. They will produce an invertible conversion between the RGB code and a subset of CMYK; that is, one can take an RGB color code and convert to certain CMYK colors, and from these CMYK colors obtain the matching, original RGB codes. However, conversion of CMYK colors to RGB cannot be reversed; this means, given a CMYK color code which is converted to RGB, performing the former conversion may not give the original CMYK color. In addition, CMYK colors may print differently from how the RGB colors display on a monitor. There is no single “good” conversion rule between RGB and CMYK, because neither RGB nor CMYK is an absolute color space.

Color Theory: A brief tutorial
For a long time, now, there has been a problem that fledgling designers have run into on a constant basis. This problem seems insignificant to most, but in actuality it is quite possibly the most important factor in a design or piece of artwork. Yes, you guessed it…I’m talking about the issue of COLOR.

Color can be a touchy subject. Sometimes artists use colors that evoke certain emotions. Other times artists use colors simply because they like the way they look. While any design instructor will tell you that the latter reason is completely wrong, I tend to disagree. In my personal opinion, color always has meaning. This meaning can be, as I mentioned, an emotional one or it can be a personal preference on the part of the artist himself, but it ALWAYS has purpose behind it.

There is nothing wrong with choosing a color because you like it because, after all, it is your work. However, when choosing a color you still want to make sure its use does not conflict with what you are trying to say with your work. Proper use of basic color theory can help you decide what colors match, as well as what each color makes people feel.

Color Matters - Everything about color
Color plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. Color can sway thinking, change actions, and cause reactions. It can irritate or soothe your eyes, raise your blood pressure or suppress your appetite.

When used in the right ways, color can save on energy consumption. When used in the wrong ways, color can contribute to global pollution.

As a powerful form of communication, color is irreplaceable. Red means “stop” and green means “go.” Traffic lights send this universal message. Likewise, the colors used for a product, web site, business card, or logo cause powerful reactions.

What Is Color
Color is the byproduct of the spectrum of light, as it is reflected or absorbed, as received by the human eye and processed by the human brain. It’s also a great design element!

Color Theory: Overview
Why study color theory? If you are involved in the creation or design of visual documents, an understanding of color will help when incorporating it into your own designs. Choices regarding color often seem rather mystical, as many seem to base decisions on nothing other than “it looks right.” Although often told I had an eye for color, the reason why some colors worked together while others did not always intrigued me and I found the study of color theory fascinating.

Secrets of Web Color Revealed
One of the most challenging aspects of visual design is developing effective color harmonies that strike a balance between monotony and overstimulation. One place to begin exploring balanced and engaging color relationships is a color wheel–a representation of the hues available in a color model.

Design Psychology
Insights into the purpose and effect of physical elements, design, and layout of web pages …and why clients should let designers handle design. The left-to-right and top-to-bottom real estate that fills the browser window on a computer monitor is a very delicate and treacherous space. While this idea rings true in a host of contexts, it is especially true for web designers and the individuals and companies that hire them.
